Guides › How to Calculate Injection Volume
Calculating the correct injection volume is a critical step in safe and accurate medication administration. This step-by-step guide walks you through the process from reading your vial to confirming the volume on your syringe.
The first piece of information you need is the dose you intend to administer, expressed in milligrams (mg). This comes from your prescribing healthcare provider or the dosage protocol you are following. For example, a prescribed dose might be 150mg or 200mg.
Look at the label on your vial. Find the concentration, which will be expressed as a number followed by "mg/mL". Common concentrations include 100mg/mL, 200mg/mL, 250mg/mL, and 300mg/mL. This number tells you how much active substance is in each milliliter of solution.
Do not confuse the total vial content (e.g., "2500mg per 10mL vial") with the concentration. The concentration is always expressed per mL.
mL = mg ÷ mg/mL
Divide your desired dose (mg) by your vial's concentration (mg/mL). The result is the volume in milliliters to draw into your syringe.
Example:
Desired dose: 150mg
Vial concentration: 300mg/mL
Calculation: 150 ÷ 300 = 0.50mL
With your calculated volume confirmed, draw the liquid into your syringe and check the graduation markings. For a 0.5mL dose on a 1mL syringe, the plunger's top edge should align with the midpoint marking. For less common volumes, count the small graduation lines carefully.
